What Is a Threat?

A threat means threatening another person or people around them with a criminal offense, such as physical assault or rape, or deliberately creating the impression that such a crime is going to happen.

What Can You Do If You Are Threatened Online?

If possible, report the profile of the person threatening you to the platform. You should then create a legally valid screenshot that clearly shows the date, time, username of the person making the threat, and the context of the threat.

If you feel unsure or unsafe, you should definitely talk to your friends or family about it. They can help you assess how serious the situation is and decide what steps to take.

With the screenshot, you can either go to a police station near you or file a report online with your state police department in order to potentially take legal action against the perpetrator.

How Is Threatening Someone Punished?

Depending on the type of threat, threatening someone can be punished with a prison sentence of up to three years or a fine.
