What Are Terrorist Activities Online?

Terrorist activities are not only something you hear about in the news from faraway countries — such content can also appear online. It is often shared with the intention of radicalizing and recruiting young adults, teenagers, or even children.

Terrorist groups and organizations can often be recognized by the fact that they use fear or violence against other people to pursue political or religious goals.

How Can I Recognize Terrorist Content?

1. Logos, flags, or symbols associated with known extremist groups

   • Swastikas, the Iron Cross, the Black Sun, or symbols associated with the German Empire

   • Red and black flags associated with Antifa, the hammer and sickle, or the circled “A”

   • The flag of the Islamic State (ISIS), the Muslim Brotherhood emblem, or Hamas/Hezbollah symbols

2. Attacks or perpetrators are celebrated as “heroes” in posts or on an account.

3. You receive messages inviting you to secret chats or meetings.
